A sanctuary on the island of Panarea, where architects recharge.

Held in a family of architects since 1956, this complex of typical island houses with private beach access and a commanding view over the ocean and the volcano of Stromboli, is the retreat for a family of Milano based architects.

When not used by the family, it is available for short term rent. In this project the goal was to capture the typical design, feel and stunning location in photos for marketing purposes on short term rental platforms.

With private beach access and endless outdoor spaces surrounding a lemon grove, it's impossible not to relax.

This project was quite an undertaking to reach. A 12 hour overnight ferry journey from Napoli was required to reach the isolated Islands North of Sicily. But it was well worth it. The sense of adventure and excitement could be felt in the air immediately from the beginning, with lots of happy island seekers gathering around the on deck bar. Old friends and new sharing a beer, with the sun setting peacefully over Napoli when steaming out of port.

Panarea view of the sea

The property was purchased in 1956 while on a backpacking trip through the Islands.

The property is part of 5 separate traditional Aeolian Island houses, located on a sprawling plot with a prime view of the sea. It has been kept immaculately in as close to original condition as possible, with original Aeolian tiles throughout, and endless historical items that tell its colourful history. Organised around a productive lemon grove, with endless sitting areas protected by the sun from beautiful flowering bougainvillea vines, indoors blends seamlessly with the outdoors and it’s a perfect place to relax.

A seamless flow from indoor to out, the property is perfect for summer living

Taking on the project of photographing this island property, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The sea views were simply mesmerizing, and I knew they needed to be a central theme in the set of images.

The expansive outdoor living areas provided endless opportunities to showcase the lifestyle this property offered, so I made sure to highlight the seamless flow from the indoors to the open-air spaces.

Using mostly soft, natural light, I aimed to portray the tranquillity of this island paradise. Highlighting the historic features and vintage elements throughout, I hope to have conveyed the sense of escape and relaxation this property provides.

The expansive ocean views deliver a profound sense of calm

Panarea is not well known to the mass tourism market in Italy, but is an Island on the radar of many VIPs. It’s isolated location in the Aeolian Islands, a string of volcanic islands north of Sicily, makes it all the more exclusive and appealing. Rugged, beautiful and unique, in recent decades it has taken on a renaissance of such, with many of the in demand island houses purchased and immaculately restored into luxury escapes.

The tranquillity and isolation in one of the most beautiful parts of Italy make it an escape in the truest of senses.
